I installed a set of your Fahren Forenner bulbs (9005 & 9006) in my 1996 GMC Jimmy. The headlights flicker. Is there a fix for this?

Hey Steve, I understand that you have installed a set of Fahren Forenner bulbs (9005 & 9006) in your 1996 GMC Jimmy and are experiencing issues with the headlights flickering.

The flickering of LED headlights is a common issue when replacing traditional halogen bulbs with LED bulbs, especially in older vehicles. This can be due to the vehicle’s electrical system not being compatible with the lower power draw of LED bulbs. Here are steps to possibly fix the issue:

      1. Check Connections: Ensure that the bulbs are securely seated in the sockets and that all connections are tight.

      2. Install Load Resistors or Decoder: LED bulbs generally draw less power than halogen bulbs, which can cause flickering. Installing load resistors or a CANbus decoder can often solve this issue by stabilizing the power supply to the LED bulbs.

      3. Check for Electrical Issues: Older vehicles like your 1996 GMC Jimmy can sometimes have underlying electrical issues. It might be wise to have a mechanic check the vehicle’s electrical system for any problems that could cause the lights to flicker.

Remember, having functioning headlights is crucial for safe driving, so it’s important to resolve this issue effectively and safely.

    Hi
I screwed up and bought 9006 bulbs instead of 9005 for my high beams. The plug is right but the locking collar is too big. Can I purchase a pair of the plastic collars that attach the bulb to the housing for 9005 bulbs.

    Thanks dave

      Hey Dave,
it’s important to note that the 9005 and 9006 bulbs, while very similar, have differences in locking tabs and usually in their intended applications (9005 is generally for high beams, and 9006 for low beams).

If you’ve purchased the 9006 bulbs by mistake and they don’t fit correctly due to the size of the locking collar, it’s generally not advisable to modify or try to rig the bulbs to fit, as this could cause improper alignment, potential damage, or other issues.

However, if you are determined to make them work, you could potentially look for adapters that might allow you to fit the 9006 bulbs into a 9005 socket. These might be available at automotive stores or online retailers. Please bear in mind that adapting bulbs in this way is not standard practice and may not result in optimal performance or safety.

The best course of action would probably be to return the 9006 bulbs and purchase the correct 9005 bulbs for your high beams. This ensures that your vehicle’s lighting system will function as intended and meet safety standards.
